Cool Boys Read, Inc.

Mission Statement

The mission of Cool Boys Read, Inc. is to promote reading, writing, and academic excellence among children, particularly African American and Latino boys.

Our History

Cool Boys Read was founded in 2007 by Susan Herriott and her son Khari. The boys’ first book was published in 2008. In February 2009, five members met to work on submissions to the Harvard Educational Review’s special issue on the election of Barack Obama. Vernon Johnson’s essay and drawing were published in the Summer 2009 issue of the prestigious journal.

Cool Boys Read, Inc. was officially incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the state of New Jersey in 2011. In 2012, the organization introduced its first ambassador, "How to Rock" star Chris O’Neal. As our ambassador, Chris shares information about our program and further inspires our members to strive for excellence as they pursue their dreams.

In 2013, the organization had its first major community event, a screening of Bring Your ‘A’ Game. Special guest Kevin Powell, an author and activist who was featured in the film, engaged participants in a lively discussion about strategies for success for young African American and Latino males.
